Moving the Food industry towards sustainability
One of the clearest examples of the movement toward sustainability is found within the food industry. From agriculture to retail sales, the way in which we grow, process and distribute food is being transformed. Each time we enter a grocery store, or dine at a restaurant that features farm to table fare, we experience this transformation.
The SMSBF recognizes the importance of this movement. Over the years, SMSBF has held a number of events featuring local, triple bottom line –people, planet and profit – businesses that are leading the sustainable food industry. We are continuing this tradition by introducing a new concentration to our mission: Sustainable Land-Based Businesses. To inaugurate our new focus, we’re proud to announce, “Building Community with Land Based Businesses”, the latest installment to our Member Guest event series.
“Building Community with Land-Based Businesses” will be held in partnership with the Michigan State University Tollgate Farm on Tuesday, November 7th from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. Urban agriculture entrepreneurs; food retailers and distributors; farmers, local restauranteurs and anyone interested in advancing sustainable local land based businesses will not want to miss this event.

“Building Community with Land Based Businesses” takes place on Tuesday, November 7th from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The afternoon begins with registration at 1:30 pm; presentations begin with an update on the SMSBF, followed by panelist presentations and a moderated panel discussion. The event ends promptly at 5:00pm.
refreshments will be served and are included in the registration price.

Presenters and Panelists
Our panelists represent a cross-section of local land-based business leaders, educators and entrepreneurs. Panelists will be sharing their experiences, exploring the ways in which they create value and exposing the challenges they face in leading land-based businesses and institutions.
Lifting-up community in the primary action of the business is a basic element of triple-bottom line business. We define our communities on many levels, from our customers to our neighbors, colleagues and trade associations. Presentations and panel discussions will reveal how land-based businesses build social capital and interact with their communities.
